Darlington Public School
Darlington Public School
Darlington Public School is an inner city school servicing the suburbs of Chippendale, Darlington, Redfern and Waterloo. It has a three unit Preschool, facilitates a weekly Play Group and is equipped with a school bus which collects students living in our local drawing area.
Our aim is to provide a safe, happy and caring environment and ensure students, staff and the community have access to a variety of learning experiences enabling them to reach their full potential.
We encourage students to;
★ have a positive self image and a belief in their own potential.
★ develop a love of learning through the Information Skills Process using problem solving, communications and decision making.
★ develop and display attitudes of respect and empathy.
We are supported in our goals by the diverse nature of our community and the many different aspirations the parents have for their children.
Parents send their children to Darlington knowing that it is a school that meets the needs of all children academically, socially, culturally and physically.
Respect, justice and equality are the core values of the school that help guide the children towards becoming independent citizens, taking their part in a democratic society.
This is achieved as they participate in the variety of opportunities that are offered enabling individual talents to be nurtured, academic skills developed and cultural activities enhanced.
Co-operative learning, behaviour and friendships are fostered throughout the school. These experiences are gained through sport, dance, drama, music and debating etc, at which the school excels.
The open-door policy of the school welcomes community groups and members to participate in all school activities and use facilities provided (ie. garden committee.)
Academic skills are developed in the classroom through a variety of programs including accelerated literacy, use of multiple thinking skills, all within the framework of quality teaching. Children are encouraged to follow their interests and talents through individual programs and projects.
Extra-curriculum Gifted and Talented activities include debating (quarter finalists), Tournament of Minds (Language, Literature, and Social Science gained honours), choir, band, public speaking, spelling bee, art competitions etc. The students are encouraged to participate in as many extra curriculum activities as possible.
“Have a go”, “Do your best” are the philosophies that the school fosters so that every child has the confidence to stand and speak before a group, from representing the school at the Henry Parkes Foundation to speaking at the school assembly.
Every individual child at Darlington is valued, their talents, abilities and interests are nurtured so that they can face the future with confidence and hope.
